Arthritis literally means joint inflammation and can occur in different forms. Osteoarthritis can be a genetic problem, or the result of either acute trauma (i.e., being hit by a car or falling down stairs) or chronic trauma (wear and tear on the bones and joints from carrying the weight of the body for many years). Both forms of arthritis are painful and should be discussed with your veterinarian, who will recommend treatment that may include medication, dietary changes, exercise and surgery.

It is important to maintain your pet's routine veterinary care and to consult your veterinarian if your pet shows signs inconsistent with good health.
