I just adopted a 3 month old male cat from the animal shelter. He's already vaccinated. He looks fine and healthy as he's very cheerful and eats and drinks well. My concern is that he sneezes often and his nose is very wet. It is winter and I always placed him in the garage when I'm away and during nighttime. Is it normal for him to sneeze? Is there anything that I need to do and be aware of?

Sneezing occasionally is a common occurrence for all pets. As in humans, cats sneeze as a protective response to an irritation of the mucous membranes that line the nasal cavity. Dust particles or air pollutants may make a cat sneeze. Other possible causes include foreign bodies, dental problems, viruses, and allergies. If you notice that your cat suddenly begins sneezing and continues to sneeze make an appointment with your veterinarian for an examination.

My cat has been sneezing frequently today. Could she have a respiratory infection?
A cat might sneeze if they have a respiratory infection. Infections are also often accompanied by discharge from the nose and/or eyes and perhaps even cough or difficulty breathing as well as a possible loss of appetite and lethargy. A cat may also sneeze quite frequently if they have a foreign object in their nose. If the sneezing continues you should have her examined by your veterinarian.

Although your friend is elderly, she still may have some good years left with attention to her health needs. There are many reasons an 18 year old cat may be coughing. It could be a respiratory infection, asthma, heart disease or lung disease. A veterinary visit may help determine the problem and allow for the appropriate treatment.

Wheezing can indicate a blockage or resistance in either the upper or lower airway. Some cats have very small nasal openings and may wheeze slightly when they sleep. In other situations there are actually restrictions in the lungs that are causing decreased airflow and hence the "wheeze" on exhale. A veterinary examination should be able to differentiate the two for you and determine what needs to be done.

Do cats get asthma? One of my cats wheezes - he also sneezes.
Yes, cats can get asthma. Asthma is an airway disorder in which the bronchi constrict. Usually it is reversible but over time changes can occur in the lungs that make the problem chronic. It is more common in Siamese and Himalayan breeds of cats. Coughing is the most common sign but with chronic problems there may be changes in breathing patterns including wheezing and sneezing. If your cat is showing these signs, a veterinary examination is needed to diagnose the problem and prescribe appropriate treatment.

It is not normal for you to hear your cat breathe. If you can hear noise when he breathes he may have congestion in either his lungs or his sinuses. Congestion can be caused by infection, heart disease or an allergy. The best way to determine what is going on would be with a veterinary examination. Your veterinarian will listen to his chest and perhaps even take radiographs to try and determine the cause of the noise. Once a diagnosis is made, appropriate treatment can be started.

My cat "Shadow" has been sneezing lately. Is there cause for concern?
A cat will sneeze from time to time, but normally very little discharge comes out of their nose when they do. If Shadow is sneezing frequently, i.e. multiple times in a day he may have a respiratory infection. These can be serious and should not be left untreated. A visit to your veterinarian will allow her to assess the problem and prescribe appropriate treatment.

I was recently told that my cat has a sinus infection. How common is that illness? And what can be done in the future to avoid it?
Sinus infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungus and also allergies. The most common signs are sneezing and a nasal discharge and the problem is more often seen in young cats. Treatment depends on the cause and is usually with antibiotics and perhaps anti-inflammatory agents. Many cats with a sinus infection experience a decrease in appetite; warming their food may help. Some cats seem prone to chronic sinus problems and need regular treatment to keep it controlled.

Wheezing and nasal discharge may be signs of a respiratory infection. The discharge from his eyes could be from an infection in his eyes or related to his wheezing. None of these synptoms should be left unattended. A veterinary visit would help to determine if he is sick or has an allergy.

When cats exert themselves, they may pant. Dogs and cats pant to help dissipate the excess heat created by intense activity. However, in some situations a cat may experience respiratory distress with very little exercise. This could be a sign of respiratory illness. If your cat shows a decrease in overall energy level, a decrease appetite, or weight loss, a veterinary visit is in order to be sure some other problem is not present.

If the weather is very cold and he does not have adequate shelter in the garage he could catch a respiratory infection. Usually this is characterized by discharge from the nose and eyes, problems with breathing and lack of appetite. If the sneezing persists, it might be best to have him checked by your veterinarian to be sure he is not ill.

What does coughing indicate in cats?
A cough is a non specific sign of respiratory disease. Cats may cough due to upper airway problems in the trachea or nasal sinus. They also may cough with lower airway disease in the lungs such as bronchitis, asthma, or pneumonia. A cough can also be a symptom of an obstruction in some part of the airway. Finally, coughing can also be a sign of cardiac or heart problems. To determine the cause of a cough, a veterinary visit and often radiographs are necessary.
