I know that cats don't drink a lot, but other than feeding her canned food and leaving out plenty of water, is there anything I can do to make sure my cat drinks enough and doesn't become dehydrated?

Hello! I have two cats, one is three years old, and the other is one year old. My problem is that they barely drink any water. I have fresh water for them daily, and even went so far as to purchase them one of those drinking water fall dishes, that have a filter and constant running water. Is there something I can do to get them to drink more water? They eat soft food twice daily, and always have a bowl of hard food to eat. Is the amount of water in a can of cat food sufficient? Please help! I would like them to drink more water for good health. Thank you!

I have a 9 month old kitten, who is very active, and also eats a lot. My main concern is that she doesn't drink water. Is there any way to get her to take a drink?

Most cats like their water to be really fresh. You can help by changing her water at least once a day if not twice. Other cats do like the drinking fountains they make for cats, which circulate the water and keep it fresh. If your cat is healthy and you provide her with plenty of clean, fresh water, the chances of dehydration decline.

For an individual cat the amount of daily water intake may vary depending on exercise, the amount of dry food vs. wet food in the diet, temperature and naturally the health status of the cat. If you have noticed a change in daily water intake in your cat, this could be a sign of a metabolic problem. Increased water intake could indicate kidney, liver or endocrine dysfunction. Please contact your veterinarian to schedule an examination of your cat. Be aware that blood tests may be needed to determine what problem is causing the increased water consumption.

Yes, you should be concerned if the water intake has noticeably increased. A cat may increase their water intake due to kidney disease, endocrine dysfunction such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism or liver disease to name the more common causes. A cat may also increase their water consumption due to a change in diet as well. If the increase intake is ongoing, a veterinary examination is needed to determine the cause and prescribe appropriate treatment.

If your cats are not having health problems, especially urinary tract problems they may be getting enough water on a daily basis. Canned cat food does have a much higher moisture content than dry food. If that constitutes a great deal of their diet then the additional water they need might not be that great. Be sure to provide them with fresh water daily and in multiple locations. To help assess how much they drink you could measure how much you put in the bowl and then measure it again the next day before you change it. The difference is likely the amount they consume.

Water is probably the best choice of drinking material for your cat. Some cats retain their taste for milk, but may experience diarrhea when they drink it. Other cats like unusual liquids, but water is really the best thing for them. Often a cat will drink more water if is kept very fresh and many cats like flowing water the best. Adequate intake of water is important for normal kidney and intestinal function and should be encouraged.

I would suspect that your kitten does drink water but not in large quantities. It is thought that our domestic cats evolved from small desert cats and are very efficient at using water. Be sure to provide fresh water daily if not twice daily. Some cats will drink more if offered water from a running water source like a fountain.
