1 Can you tell me what the signs of antifreeze poisoning are? Poisoning by antifreeze, or ethylene glycol, is one of the most common types of poisoning in pets because it has a sweet taste that appeals to dogs and cats. When ingested, ethylene glycol can cause permanent kidney failure if not treated early. Soon after ingestion cats will appear to be drunk, staggering, have a rapid pulse, and exhibit unusual behavior. Later, vomiting, trouble breathing and excitement occur, followed by even more difficulty walking, seizures, coma, and death. Often kidney function ceases or becomes greatly reduced. To be most successful, treatment should begin long before any signs appear. If you suspect that your cat may have ingested ethylene glycol, take her to veterinarian immediately. He or she will induce vomiting followed by flushing the stomach. IV fluids will be given along with other supportive medication. Cats treated early often survive but damage to their kidneys may be extensive. Those that are not treated early generally do not survive.

2 Should I give my cat aspirin for arthritis? Absolutely not! You should never give your pet an over-the-counter medication without discussion with your veterinarian. Some medications can be harmful to your cat. Aspirin can be especially toxic to cats. Even small doses can cause depression, vomiting, fever and even coma or death within a few days.
