1 What information do you have and what should be done with a cat with kidney disease? She has kidney disease and is 15 years old. She is eating and drinking O.K. The prevalence of renal disease increases with age and is not uncommon in cats over 15 years of age. Many elderly cats suffer from renal disease that has been present for some time but undiagnosed. Often renal function deteriorates progressively over several months to years. This can lead to a decrease in urine concentrating ability which may result in an increase in water consumption and subsequent increase in urine production. Some cats may also suffer from anemia due to a loss of renal function. Many cats will also show some weight loss. Patients that are compensating well can be treated as outpatients. Free access to fresh water is important and some veterinarians may recommend special diets for cats with renal disease. If you have not already done so, please consult with your veterinarian for the appropriate treatment for your cat.
