1 My orange tabby is 12 yrs. old and has constipation problems once in a while. Any suggestions?

2 We have continual problems with our cat being constipated. He has been in for enemas but we hate to have to subject him to that. We feed him a senior food, which he loves. He is in perfect health otherwise except for this. Is there any other diet I could give him that would help him. He is almost 10 years old and a really great cat. Thanks for your help!

3 I have two long haired cats. I often find hard stools in various places in the house. I think they are constipated. I have tried putting corn oil in the food and they won't eat the food. Please advise.

4 Our 8 yr. old cat has a very hard stool. What can we give him to soften it up?

5 How often should a cat have a bowel movement?

6 My tabby Buddy is 10 years old. He has a good appetite but I worry that he is not going to the litter box enough. He seems constipated, is there something you would recommend?

1 My orange tabby is 12 yrs. old and has constipation problems once in a while. Any suggestions? Constipation in older cats is usually a problem associated with diet, lack of exercise, or hairballs. High fiber diets may be beneficial for recurrent constipation. Also, be sure plenty of fresh water is available. As always, before making a dietary change be sure to check with your veterinarian.

He is in perfect health otherwise except for this. Is there any other diet I could give him that would help him. He is almost 10 years old and a really great cat. Thanks for your help! Older cats are prone to constipation problems. It may be helpful to get him to drink more liquid including water. Providing him with a cat fountain might help and you may try offering him the water from a can of tuna. If the problem seems to be from hairballs, you could try mixing Purina ONE Advanced Nutrition Hairball formula with the senior formula and see if the additional fiber helps him. It also might be worthwhile to make sure he can easily access the litter box for defecation and that he finds it clean enough. Litter box problems can contribute to constipation so be sure to put enough litter in the box and keep it very clean.

3 I have two long haired cats. I often find hard stools in various places in the house. I think they are constipated. I have tried putting corn oil in the food and they won't eat the food. Please advise. Often constipation is due to lack of fiber or liquid in the diet. Some cats will become constipated due to hairballs, which might be likely with long haired cats. You could try feeding Purina ONE Advanced Nutrition Hairball Formula and see if that helps. If the problem continues, you may want to contact your veterinarian for additional help.

4 Our 8 yr. old cat has a very hard stool. What can we give him to soften it up? A very hard, dry stool is usually a sign of constipation, It might mean that your cat is not taking in enough fiber and/or liquid. Make sure he has a constant supply of fresh, clean water that is easily available to him. It might also help to offer him a higher fiber diet. Finally, your veterinarian can prescribe medication that will soften his stool, so please also contact her for additional help.

5 How often should a cat have a bowel movement? The average cat should have a bowel movement daily. Some cats may even have two bowel movements a day. If a cat is not defecating daily they are likely constipated. The most common cause of constipation in cats is hairballs. In elderly cats constipation can be caused by poor intestinal motility. Lack of defecation should never be ignored as it can lead to serious colonic dysfunction and discomfort for a cat. In some cases feeding food higher in fiber can help with constipation.

6 My tabby Buddy is 10 years old. He has a good appetite but I worry that he is not going to the litter box enough. He seems constipated, is there something you would recommend? A cat that is not constipated should defecate daily. If your cat is going more than a day between bowel movements he could be constipated. As a cat ages their intestinal tract may slow down or they may not take in enough liquid both of which may lead to constipation. The first step would be to determine if he does not defecate on a regular basis. If that is the case, a veterinary visit would be next to determine the cause of the constipation and prescribe appropriate treatment.
