1 My family just got a puppy and ever since my cat has been acting agitated and hisses and growls at me. What do I do? Your cat is likely agitated over the new puppy in the house. If your cat has never been around dogs she is probably scared. Make sure she has a safe place with food, water and a litter box so that she can get away from the puppy. In the beginning all interactions with the puppy should be supervised with the puppy on a leash to avoid chasing behavior. Give her time to adjust and don't rush things. Hopefully with time and patience she will adjust.

2 I have an 11-year old cat and a 9 year old cat. Recently we got a 3 year dog. My 9 year old cat is doing fine with the dog but, my 11-year old cat is not. What can I do? It often takes a long time for a cat to adjust to a dog. In the meantime it is essential that the cat can access the things she needs without coming into contact with the dog. This means that litter boxes, food and water bowls be easily accessible. It also is a good idea to carefully monitor her activity and eating. New changes can result in anxiety and stress which may affect appetite, activity and health in an older cat. Finally, make sure that the dog cannot and does not chase the cats, this will only reinforce her fear and anxiety and make getting them together more difficult.

3 I just recently moved from my apartment to my parents' home. My parents have a dog and lately I noticed that my cat is sleeping more and hardly eating. She's not as happy or playful when I was living in my apartment. I am concerned, what do I do? Although the change in living arrangements may account for her change in behavior, there also could be a medical problem. The first step is a veterinary examination to be sure that she is not ill. If all is well, then it might help to make sure that she has private time away from the dog. It also is important that her food bowls, water bowls and litter box are located within easy access and not accessible to the dog. It also might help to increase play and attention so she will get used to her new environment.
