Why does my cat (female, about a year old) sleep so much? She will sleep right through the night, and then sleep again right through the day, maybe being a little active in mid-morning. In the evening, she is very active, chases around the apartment with the other cat, and goes outside for a while, so she doesn't seem to be ill. How much sleep is too much?

My cat Max is 5 years old. He eats breakfast at 5am then goes back to bed and sleeps all day. I'm home with him so I know. My question is do you think he sleeps too much? Or does all this sleeping come with age?

It may seem amazing, but the average housecat may sleep or rest for up to 18 hours a day! It is important to note, that some of the time your cat is lying down she may not actually be sleeping, but just resting because there is nothing that catches her interest. You can however, create an environment that may be more conducive to your cat being awake. Be sure to rotate toys every few days and also plan to have at least one active playtime daily. It might also help to provide a climbing tower with perches at different heights. Some cats even like cat videos and will watch them on television and seem to be entertained.

It is speculated that the average housecat may sleep up to 18 hours a day. However, that does not mean that they have to sleep that much. Enriching the environment with toys, window perches, interactive play sessions with you and grooming activities can all keep your cat more active. Increased activity has positive effects not only on the muscles and heart, but also because it will help keep weight gain to a minimum. Try engaging your cat in other activities and see if he will be awake more often. If he is not interested, perhaps he is ill and should be examined by your veterinarian.
