3 Why does my 6 month old mastiff eat rocks? He has no other problems with eating and is healthy. I try to watch him but he finds them when I am not looking, and I see them in his stool. Could they harm him?

Young puppies tend to investigate everything by putting it in their mouth, so on a walk you need to be especially watchful. Perhaps walking him with a head collar or head halter will help you control his head and prevent him from eating things. If he is still showing discomfort from eating something a good examination is necessary to determine what to do. Please take him to your veterinarian so she can look in his mouth and throat and determine what is making him cough. back to top
2 What kind of plant can hurt my puppy? The list of toxic plants is actually too long to include here. When a new puppy comes into the house, it is best to place plants out of reach or block the puppy out of those rooms. If your puppy does ingest a plant, remember to take some of the plant to your veterinarian to help identify if the plant is harmful. back to top

Could they harm him? Eating rocks and other non-food items is common in young dogs and can result in intestinal blockage which could be dangerous. Young dogs without sufficient exercise and activities may start to play with inappropriate items in the environment. When they do that, they may accidentally ingest them. Going outside with a puppy, good supervision and appropriate play are the ways to prevent and stop a puppy from eating inappropriate objects. back to top
