5 We have recently added a 7 year old German Shepherd to our family. He has an awful time trying to have a bowel movement. Our vet said not to worry because his bowel movement is not hard, but now he also has some loose stools and he yelps when I try to clean him. What can we do? Should we take him back to the vet?

6 I have a two year old black Labrador that for the past two weeks has had pure white feces. It started out three weeks ago as kind of a bright yellow. I have never seen any like this before out of any dog that I have ever seen. What should I do?

7 My dog (she is a Pit and a Golden Retreiver mix) keeps pooping poop that is yellow and really mushy. I feed her Purina One Beef and Rice for Large Dogs and I walk her 30 min in the am and 30 min in the pm. Does her poop color mean she is not healthy? What am I NOT doing right? Thanks!

8 My dog has had very loose stool and diarrhea for about a week, he is still eating regularly and drinking plenty of water. The stool is very foul smelling and I am wondering if he has worms?

1 Our six month old black labrador has started throwing up his food, are we feeding him too much or could he be sick? There are several reasons your dog might be vomiting. The first is the possibility of illness, so if the vomiting continues please call your veterinarian and schedule an examination. Some dogs may eat too quickly and then vomit. You might try feeding several smaller meals and see if this helps. Finally, be sure you are feeding a diet appropriate for the age and activity level of your puppy.

2 My dog's stool is runny after commencing crate training, what could be the cause? Dogs can get diarrhea for various reasons. They may have a loose stool due to changes in their diet, intestinal parasites, or a gastrointestinal infection. They also may experience diarrhea if they are anxious. I would first suggest checking out any medical causes such as illness or parasites and if all is well re-evaluate your crate training routine.

3 My Saint Bernard has been having an upset stomach and diarrhea since he has been 4 months old. I there anything I can do to help him? Diarrhea can have multiple causes including diet, infection, inflammation or parasites. Your veterinarian is in the best position to decide what is wrong and how best to treat your dog. Ongoing diarrhea should not be left untreated and could result in other health problems. Please visit your veterinarian for an examination and treatment.

4 My poodle has a sensitive stomach and has colitis on and off. I would like to switch to a Purina product that is for this problem. What do you recommend? Some dogs with sensitive stomachs may do well on a lamb and rice diet such as Purina ONE Lamb and Rice Formula. Whenever you switch from one diet to another it should be done slowly and over a 7-10 day time period. Each day you should add a small amount of the new food while decreasing the amount of the old food provided by the same degree. If at any time gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting or diarrhea is noted, then the new diet can be discontinued and the problem treated. If your dog has a severe problem with colitis, a prescription diet from your veterinarian may be necessary to keep his bowel functioning normally.

Our vet said not to worry because his bowel movement is not hard, but now he also has some loose stools and he yelps when I try to clean him. What can we do? Should we take him back to the vet? By all means you should return to your veterinarian for another physical examination. There are several possible reasons for the signs you are seeing in your dog. Diarrhea can be caused by infection, change in diet or eating something irritating. The pain in the anal area could be a sign of anal sac infection or just irritation from the fecal matter on the skin. If he is an intact male dog he may have prostatic enlargement which can cause difficulty defecating. A veterinary visit should help determine what is going on and then your veterinarian can prescribe appropriate treatment.

I have never seen any like this before out of any dog that I have ever seen. What should I do? The change in the color of the feces could signal a problem in the gastrointestinal tract. The normal brown color of feces is usually due to the addition of bile into the intestinal tract as part of the digestive process. Pale or gray feces could be a sign of a bile duct obstruction. The color of the feces may also be affected when there is a problem with the pancreas. In either case the problem is serious and warrants a veterinary examination and probably blood test.

I feed her Purina One Beef and Rice for Large Dogs and I walk her 30 min in the am and 30 min in the pm. Does her poop color mean she is not healthy? What am I NOT doing right? Thanks! You are feeding your dog a complete and balanced diet for her age and size. If she continues to have diarrhea, there is likely something wrong with her gastrointestinal tract. The light color of her stool may indicate a digestive problem and the diarrhea could be due to infection, irritation or parasites. A veterinary visit and a stool sample should help determine why she has diarrhea. Once the cause is known appropriate treatment can be prescribed.

8 My dog has had very loose stool and diarrhea for about a week, he is still eating regularly and drinking plenty of water. The stool is very foul smelling and I am wondering if he has worms? Diarrhea for a week is a problem that should not go untreated. Diarrhea can be from intestinal parasites, infection or inflammation of the intestinal tract, a pancreatic problem or even a foreign body. A veterinary visit is essential to determine the cause of the problem and select the appropriate treatment.
