1 My dog cut her pad on her leg but it is not bleeding. What should I do about it?

2 Our 18 month old lab seems to have bruised his paw jumping off a high place on Sunday. He limps some and seems somewhat mellow for him. However, when we examine the leg/paw, we find no specific trigger point and get no wincing whatsoever. Any advice aside from aspirin and rest?

3 I think my pup hurt his foot by scratching at his kennel door(crate). He's been favoring it and limping. I see no visible injury and he doesn't yelp or whimper when I touch it, but he is limping and holding it up. What can I do for him? Would a children's Advil® or something along those lines help? He's an 8 month Basenji & weighs 22lbs.

4 My dog ripped a nail out--I don't know how she did it. How do I get it to stop bleeding? I put ice on it, but if I put her down it bleeds again.

5 My shar-pei has what appears to be a cracked claw on his rear paw. The toe the claw is on is swollen and tender and he is holding the paw up and not walking on it. What is the proper treatment for this condition or does the claw need to be removed? He is an inside dog and in great health otherwise. Thanks

6 Our 4 year old Blue Heeler slipped while playing; he (neutered) did the splits both front and rear legs. This happened about 2 weeks ago and most of the day he gimps on his left rear leg. He is a housedog but spends a lot of the day helping around the ranch. What can we do for him?

1 My dog cut her pad on her leg but it is not bleeding. What should I do about it? The pads on the bottom of the feet are very thick and usually have a good blood supply. Because the pads are an important cushion for the dog, they need special care. If the cut is deep, it may take quite some time to heal and could get infected. For the best healing, the cut may need to be stitched and the foot bandaged. It also might be necessary for your dog to take some antibiotics. Therefore, a veterinary examination is needed to decide the appropriate treatment and speed the healing process.

First, aspirin can cause gastrointestinal problems in dogs and should not be used without your veterinarians approval. Next, there are many reasons that a dog might limp. He could have done some soft tissue damage to muscles or even his joints. There are also some inflammatory diseases of the bones that are common in young, fast growing large breed dogs. If the limping and the change in activity last more than 1-2 days, a veterinary examination is in order to determine the cause of these changes.

He's an 8 month Basenji & weighs 22lbs. Dogs and cats do not respond to human medications the same as we do. In many cases they may have difficulty metabolizing the medication. Therefore you should never give your puppy any medication that has not been prescribed by your veterinarian. Another issue in this situation is his reaction to his dog kennel. If he is scratching at his kennel, he may be experiencing separation anxiety, a treatable behavioral condition. When you take him to the veterinarian for his leg, please also discuss possible behavioral diagnosis and treatments to help with his anxiety in his kennel.

4 My dog ripped a nail out--I don't know how she did it. How do I get it to stop bleeding? I put ice on it, but if I put her down it bleeds again. A broken nail can bleed profusely and be quite painful. If applying pressure does not stop the bleeding then veterinary attention is needed. Your veterinarian can apply something to help clotting and bandage the foot to protect the nail while it heals. She may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent any infection. Normally after a few days the bandage can be removed and the nail will regrow.

What is the proper treatment for this condition or does the claw need to be removed? He is an inside dog and in great health otherwise. Thanks When a dog damages one of his claws it can be extremely painful and may even get infected. The best course of action is to see your veterinarian. She may need to sedate your dog and remove the damaged claw and bandage his foot. She may also prescribe antibiotics. The claw will eventually grow back over time. Please do not let this continue, as it is quite uncomfortable for your dog.

He is a housedog but spends a lot of the day helping around the ranch. What can we do for him? If the problem has persisted this long he probably needs to be examined. He may have damaged some muscles or ligaments and it is even possible that he has dislocated or broken a bone. A veterinary examination would help determine the extent of his injuries and then prescribe appropriate treatment.
