1 I recently lost my 13 yr old Labrador retriever and my 11 yr old Labrador seems depressed. Is this normal? What can I do to help her out? She seems so lost on car rides and walks. She lays in the back room by herself. There is a 2 yr old beagle here to keep her company and I am home all day but it does not seem to help. Thank you

Thank you It is not uncommon for housemates to mourn when they lose their companion. The signs that are commonly seen include lack of activity, decreased appetite and even confusion and anxiety. The remaining dog may have modeled her behavior after the companion she lost. You can help her by trying to get her to do new things that are different than what she did with the other dog. This might be a walk in a different location, play with a new toy and even something simple such as a body massage. Give her time, it is not uncommon for a dog to mourn for several weeks. If she is not eating however, she could also be ill and a veterinary examination may be a good idea. back to top
