What's the safest way for my dog to ride in the car?

Hi. My mother just got a puppy. She is a cattle dog/spaniel mix. When we take her in the car she drools heavily and throws up when she gets out of the car. Is there anything we can do? And what might cause this? Thank you for your time

Because of the possibility of injury to your dog should you need to stop suddenly, some type of restraint is the safest way to travel with your dog in the car. The most common types are doggy seat belts (harnesses) and crates. Always make sure you introduce your dog to the restraint method in a positive way and with short car rides to avoid an adverse reaction to the restraint.

The most common causes of excessive drooling while riding in the car are anxiety and motion sickness. It may help to withhold food prior to car rides to decrease the nausea. In other cases very short car rides (1-2 houses) can acclimate the dog to the car and allow her to learn to ride without anxiety. Over time the distance and time in the car is increased as the dog learns to be in the car without drooling. If the problem persists and you must travel long distances with your dog, your veterinarian can prescribe medication to lessen the anxiety and decrease the nausea.
