1 My rottweiler is a picky eater, which is odd for the breed, so it is sometimes difficult keeping weight on him. My sitter ran out of his diet while I was away, and so I picked up a bag of Purina ONE™ Large Breed Adult Formula and he gobbled it down. He just turned a year old, should I be worried about his lack of size? He is a show dog from very good bloodlines, but he is lacking height, I work for a vet, but somehow I think I must have done something wrong. Any words of wisdom?

2 I have a 10-year-old black lab that has thyroid problem that we are giving him pills for, but my problem is he eats dirt and then sometimes he loses his meals. Please help me. We have been feeding Purina for years and hope this is not the problem.

3 My 1 year old golden retriever mix is not eating as much as he should. He has had intestinal worms in the past, but I can find no evidence of them now.

4 I would like to know why my dog won't eat his dog food? I feed him and he just won't eat, should I be concerned?

5 The Purina ONE bag tells me to feed my dog of 56 pounds 2 and 1/2 to 3 and 3/4 cups of dog food a day. Is that just one time a day? He doesn't seem to be satisfied with that not to mention, he looks too thin.

6 My puppy likes bread, is too much bad for him?

7 My dog has lost her appetite and has developed gas, what could have caused this?

If he likes the new dog food, I would keep feeding him that diet. Keep in mind that size does vary and he may never be a large dog. There are many reasons for changes in appetite and lack of appetite. Animals that are not very active may need smaller amounts of food to meet their caloric needs. Some dogs are very sensitive to their environment and if they are anxious may not eat well. Examples of things that could cause anxiety and affect appetite include other dogs in the home, inconsistent scheduling, separation anxiety and inconsistent interactions with the dog. If you think anxiety may be contributing to your dog's problems, perhaps a consultation with a veterinary behaviorist would be helpful.

If you have not done so, you may want to ask your vet to recheck his thyroid values to be sure that the amount of medication is sufficient. Eating abnormal materials can be due to a behavioral issues or intestinal irritation. The vomiting may be due to the ingestion of the dirt. It might be prudent for your vet to take radiographs of the abdomen to look for possible problems there.

3 My 1 year old golden retriever mix is not eating as much as he should. He has had intestinal worms in the past, but I can find no evidence of them now. A change in appetite could be caused by a number of things. At one year of age, your puppy has likely ended his rapid rate of growth so that his nutritional needs may have changed. If his activity level has decreased he also may not be as hungry. On the other hand, if he were ill for any reason, the very first sign would be a decreased appetite. Even though you do not see any worms in his stool, he still could have intestinal parasites. If the problem persists for more than a few days, he should be examined by your veterinarian.

4 I would like to know why my dog won't eat his dog food? I feed him and he just won't eat, should I be concerned? There are some dogs that from time to time will not eat their food for a day or so but seem to act normally. However, usually when a dog will no longer eat their food it is cause for concern. A lack of appetite is often a sign of illness or disease. In other situations a dog may eat, but just not with the same gusto as before. This also could be illness related, but it also could be that your dog might like a change in diet. If however, your dog is not eating and acting ill a veterinary visit is needed to determine why your dog will not eat.

He doesn't seem to be satisfied with that not to mention, he looks too thin. The amount on the Purina ONE bag is a suggested total daily amount for a dog in that size range. However, each dog is an individual and may need more or less than the recommended amount. If a dog is not maintaining his weight, it could be that he needs more food. However, there are medical problems that may contribute to weight loss including parasites and metabolic disorders. If your dog is persistently underweight, a veterinary examination is in order.

6 My puppy likes bread, is too much bad for him? Often our puppies and dogs like food other than their own food. While extra treats in small amounts are not necessarily harmful, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, by adding other things to their diet, you can diminish the intake of a complete and balanced diet for your puppy. Second, additional food may create excess weight gain which is not healthy. It is best to make the bulk of the food intake a good balanced commercial diet with other foods as occasional treats.

7 My dog has lost her appetite and has developed gas, what could have caused this? Intestinal gas and loss of appetite could signal any number of problems. An infection or inflammation in the intestinal tract often leads to gas and may be irritating enough to cause the dog not to eat. If the problem persist for more than a day then your veterinarian should be contacted.
