My 10 month old purebreed black lab is having some eye problems. His eyes are releasing a bit of mucus and seem to be swollen and itchy. We live on 7 acres of hay so I suspect it might be allergies or a bee sting. He is very active and hard to hold still to examine. What can I do for him?

I was wondering if you could help me. My dog, Hunter, was fetching a ball in some bushes yesterday and some how hurt his eye. He has a hard time seeing with it, and keeps the eye closed most of the time. There is also a faint amount of puss coming out of the injured eye. If you could help me in any way I would be thankful.

Recently I have noticed a yellow mucus-like discharge around my 13 month mix breed dog's eyes. In the past her eyes have wept clear. Is this something that I should be concerned about? Will it go away by itself or should I seek professional help? Thank you.

I think I inadvertently scratched my dog's eye this morning when I was petting her. Since then, she has been squinting and/or keeping her eye closed. There is a green discharge out of the corner of her eye, and it seems to be swelling a little. Will it heal itself, or should I take her to the vet?

My dog is 14, he has brown eyes but they have a blue haze over them and it seems his vision is slightly affected. Is there something I can give to him to clear this up? Thank you.

Every day (mid morning) my Rottweiler has an accumulation of a greenish mucus in both eyes. It will stay there until I wipe it out. My vet said it was the flea collar. We removed the flea collar however the condition still exists. What other possibilities should I investigate?

We have an older Brittney Spaniel. She has an abnormal growth on her eyelid. It seems to bother her. I was wondering what it could be. It is a dark coloration and about the size of a small jellybean.

My Airedale is 6 months old and his eyes are very running with watery fluid. Also, where his lower/corner eyelids are located, it is very pink (like it is torn there). Does he have allergies? It this an injury or an infection?

My parents have a 9-year-old Springer Spaniel in great health and mood. Suddenly he seems to be having trouble with his eyesight. He is hesitant to jump down from heights like tables or even a bed. We think he is having problems measuring the distance between himself and the floor. What can we do? A veterinarian suggested Vitamin A tablets but isn't there anything else that we can do?

Redness around the eyes usually is a sign of irritation either allergic, infectious or an injury. Since you cannot tell which it is, the best thing is to just keep the area clean using cool water. If the eye appears very painful, in other words she cannot or will not open it, she could have a serious condition. This could require immediate treatment. Please consult with your veterinarian.

What can I do to stop or help eye discharge in my dog?
All dogs may have a small amount of discharge from their eyes from time to time. If the daily amount is large or discolored this could indicate a problem with the eye. Discharge may increase with either an infection or an allergic response. At times the discharge may look infected and even cause the eyelids to stick together. If any of these things are happening then a veterinary visit is needed to get the appropriate treatment for your dog.

It certainly is possible that your dog is experiencing an allergic response to something in his environment. However, he also might have an infection or irritant in his eyes which could be serious if untreated. Therefore, if the problem is ongoing, I would suggest a veterinary visit to determine exactly what is going on and receive appropriate treatment. At the same time they can give you instructions on the best way to examine and treat his eyes.

Discharge from the eyes is usually a sign of an infection or an allergy. In either case, it is something that should not be left untreated. If no treatment is established, long-term damage to the cornea or conjunctiva could result. Therefore, it is best if you have your dog examined by your veterinarian so that appropriate treatment can begin. It is unlikely that his eye problem is related to his stay at obedience school.

My dog is a Chow and she is blind. She has this coat over her eyes and I was wandering is there any chance that if it was removed could she see again?
There could be a number of reasons that your Chow has a film over her eyes. The most common cause is simply a keratitis or inflammation of the cornea which can lead to changes in corneal clarity. Another form of the problem is called Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, which means dry eye. This occurs because there is deficient tear flow which causes the eye to dry out and thus prone to other problems such a filming over of the cornea. Both of these problems are usually treatable with medication. Therefore to determine if either of these are the problem or some other disease of the eye is occurring, a veterinary visit is essential.

When something is covering the eye it is usually a sign of an irritation or infection. Since the eyes are very vulnerable to injury, these types of changes should not be ignored nor treated at home. A veterinary visit is essential to determine the cause of the problem and get appropriate treatment.

Does my dog have an eye infection or something? She loves it when I rub her eyes. Is that normal?
Some dogs seem to like to have their faces rubbed including the area around their eyes. If your dogs eyes are red, have a discharge or she is squinting or rubbing them then an infection is a good possibility. Otherwise she just might find the sensation pleasant and enjoyable.

Why do my dogs eyes water?
A dogs eyes might water for several reasons. If the discharge is clear, but more than normal the dog may be producing more tears or not funneling them away properly. If the discharge has a color to it, the eye might be infected. Finally, some dogs will have excess tear production coupled with the shape of their eye that causes a run over of tears. Your veterinarian could help you determine which of these is causing the problem and then prescribe appropriate treatment.

It is likely that your dog injured his eye while playing. Common eye injuries include conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. Both are serious and should not be left untreated. Until you can get to the veterinarian you can keep the eye area clean using a cotton ball and tepid water. Under no circumstances should you attempt to put any drops or ointments into the eye until he has been examined by your veterinarian and you have received the appropriate medication.

Clear discharge from the eyes generally does not signify a problem. When that discharge changes color the dog may be experiencing an infection or eye irritation. Some dogs also may suffer from allergies that might create excess drainage from their eyes. Normally this does not resolve on it's own. Therefore a veterinary visit is the best way to find out what the problem is and get appropriate treatment.

Eye injuries can be very serious and generally do not heal on their own. If there is already a colored discharge from her eye she may have an infection. The squinting is an indication that the eye is painful if she tries to open it. A veterinary visit is essential to determine what has happened and to prescribe the appropriate medication.

My dog is 14, he has brown eyes but they have a blue haze over them and it seems his vision is slightly affected. Is there something I can give to him to clear this up? Thank you.
As dogs age they are likely to experience many metabolic changes in their body. One common change is nuclear sclerosis, a thickening in the lens of the eye that makes it look a grey/blue. In other cases they may have corneal disease that will cloud the cornea and also appear bluish in color. They could possibly have an infection inside the eye that is causing the color change. Finally, various metabolic diseases may cause ocular signs as well. A veterinary examination would help determine the cause of the color change and the appropriate medical intervention to aid in treatment.

It is not unusual for a dog to accumulate some material in the corner of their eyes. However, if the material looks infected, is green or has an odor and/or the eyes are red or swollen this may indicate an infection. A visit to your veterinarian for an ocular examination would be the next step if the discharge continues.

My Rottwelier puppy's eye is swelling slightly, what should I do?
A swelling in or around the eye area can be a sign of a serious problem. This may be caused by an infection, irritation, foreign object in the eye or even an insect bite. You should never use any over the counter medication in your pet's eyes without instructions from your veterinarian. A veterinarian would help determine why the eye is swelling and then prescribe appropriate medication.

Growths on the eye can be either benign or serious. If the growth has been there for some time it can be irritating to her eye. The best thing to do would be to visit your veterinarian to determine if the growth needs to be removed.

A senior dog may begin to lose their vision for any number of reasons. Common problems include cataracts, retinal atrophy, glaucoma, infection or inflammation of the eye. An ocular examination may help determine the cause of the problem. Some causes are treatable while others are not. A board certified veterinary ophthalmologist may be able to help determine the problem. There may be one in your area or at the nearby veterinary school.
