I have tried many different kinds of food for them. One will eat almost anything and the other one is picky. How do I really know what food is good for them. Please help.

I've adopted two brother/sister golden retrievers from a rescue group that were kenneled for five years and not looked at. Their former owners were doctors and didn't have time to spend with them. They look older for their ages 5 and 6, and they do a lot of laying around compared to my last golden I raised from puppyhood on. If I'm not outside/inside entertaining them all they do is lay. They never leave the yard completely unleashed which is great, but seem like they don't know how to play or keep occupied. They seem very happy now and have a completely changed life being indoor dogs. The trouble is they have gained a lot of weight and I only feed them 3 cups of dog food a day each. Half in the morning and half in the evening, no scraps but some rawhides to chew. I can't seem to get their weight down even with a lot of walking and playing ball. I've had thyroid tests done and they come out normal. Our former golden ate scraps and much more food and never had such a weight problem. What should I do? Someone told me that from being kenneled so long that their metabolisms have slowed due to the inactivity for years. Is that true?

My dog is really fat. I play sports and go to school do I don't have much time to play with her. Is there a different way to get her girlish figure back?
The first step is to analyse her diet. If she is gaining weight then she is probably taking in more calories than she uses on a daily basis. So, in order for her to lose weight, she needs to eat less. You also could try a food that is meant for overweight dogs. Next, even short periods of exercise can be beneficial. Why not start with a short 10 minute walk at least 3-4 times a week? This will increase her exercise and allow you and her to have some quaility time. Start small and you may soon see results not only in her girlish figure, but in how much fun you have together.

If a dog is gaining weight then they are taking in more calories than they need on a daily basis. It might be helpful to keep a journal of all food that your dog gets-including any other treats and table food. It also is important to actually use a measuring cup to measure her food so that the amount is accurate. Another alternative is to switch to a weight management diet such as Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management Formula. Finally, try to add in some exercise such as a daily walk. Start with a short 10 minute walk and as she loses weight and gets fitter, you can walk longer and farther. Finally, if nothing seems to help, a veterinary visit is probably in order to be sure that there are no medical problems that are causing her to remain overweight.

Purina ONE Lamb & Rice Formula has 451 calories per cup. One of the best ways to help your dog lose weight is to not only limit her caloric intake but also increase her exercise. I would suggest that you try to incorporate a daily walk into her routine. Start with short walks and as she builds up her tolerance you can make them longer. Not only will she lose weight, but she will enjoy her time outside and with you.

She is currently on another low fat dry food, but my vet recommended I might want to switch to Purina® Fit & Trim®. She needs to lose at least 3 pounds. Please help.
Trying to help your dog lose weight usually involves three things. First, she needs to eat fewer calories than she is eating now. This can happen with any nutritionally balanced diet dog food. However, if she is eating too much of any diet dog food she will not lose weight. Try measuring how much you are feeding her now and decrease that amount by one quarter. Secondly, exercise helps to burn calories. Certain types of activities might be too strenuous for a dog with intervertebral disc disease. Check with your veterinarian for acceptable exercises. Finally, we often add calories to our dog′s diets with treats and table scraps. Try measuring out her daily allotment of food and use a small portion of that for treats through out the day. That way you are not adding additional calories to her diet. If you are able to do these three things, your dog should lose some weight.

My vet recommended my dog lose about 40lbs, how much time should it take to lose it?
Forty pounds is quite a bit of weight to get off your dog. It is best accomplished slowly using a combination of dietary control and moderate exercise. It often helps to break the total daily intake allowed into two meals. This will help the dog feel less hungry and may keep the humans from giving additional treats. The goal should be a weight loss of 2% of body weight a week since slow weight loss is safer for the dog. So, depending on your dog's initial weight, it may take quite some time to lose 40 pounds. But, as long as weight loss is constant, do not despair and keep on the weight loss program.

What do I do if my dog is too fat?
When a dog is overweight it is usually because the dog is taking in more calories than they need. Therefore weight loss can be accomplished by controlling food intake and increasing exercise. There are many good reasons to try and get your dog to lose weight. Research has shown that leaner dogs live longer than fat ones and a lean body weight promotes better health. To help your dog lose weight, try a commerical weight management diet which is designed to create the feeling of fullness while providing fewer calories. In addition, I would recommend starting a short daily walk. The increased exercise will help boost your dog's metabolism and increase weight loss. As your dog loses weight, she undoubtedly will be able to walk farther and feel better and so will you knowing you have helped her live a longer, happier life.

How can I get my dog to gain more weight?
When a dog is unable to maintain a healthy weight several factors may be involved. First, it could be a health issue such as intestinal parasites, endocrine dysfunction, gastrointestinal disease or dental disease. Therefore a veterinary examination to rule out a medical problem is extremely important. If all is normal, then your dog is not gaining weight because he is not taking in calories that he can use. It is important that your dog be on a good quality commercial diet that meets the nutritional needs for his lifestage and activity level. If your dog is very active, he may need a higher protein diet, or if there are special needs such as kidney disease, then a diet especially formulated for that condition is necessary. All of these issues should be discussed with your veterinarian and then the appropriate diet can be chosen for your dog.

I have a four year old Weimeraner. She is very overweight. What are the best steps to start her on a diet or good exercise program? Is this normal after a dog has been spayed?
A spayed female dog is often less active and if fed too much, can become overweight. Research has shown that leaner dogs live longer than heavier dogs, so getting her to lose weight is good for her health. You might want to consider feeding a weight management diet, such a Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management formula. Calculate the total amount of food she should have in a day and then split it into two meals. It also might help to begin a routine of daily walks. At first she may not want to walk far, but as she slims down and becomes fitter she should have more energy and want to walk longer distances. Remember, weight loss takes time and should be accomplished slowly. If you stick with it, you can have your pet slim and fit.

It would be much better for your dog if he were fed a quality commercial dog food rather than people food or cereal. You might want to consider Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management formula, which has 25% less fat and 15% fewer calories than the lamb and rice formula and would be a good choice for weight loss. Remember to also control the portions; if your dog eats large amounts of any dog food, he will gain weight. I would start him on 1-2 cups a day and see how he does.

What is the best and easiest way to help an over-weight dog lose pounds?
There are two components to achieving weight loss. In order to lose weight your dog needs to take in fewer calories and use more calories than he takes in. Feeding a dog a weight control diet such as Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management is a good starting point toward weight loss for your dog. It also is important to feed the proper amount, and his daily intake should be measured and split between two meals. Finally, a daily walk or playtime will help burn calories and perhaps accelerate his weight loss.

The best thing to feed your dogs is a good quality commercial diet. Since they are overweight, I would suggest a weight management diet, such as Purina ONE® Healthy Weight Management Formula. Keep in mind however, that in order for your pets to lose weight, they need to take in fewer calories than they use. Therefore, not only is it helpful to feed a weight lmanagement diet, you must carefully control the amount of food provided for them every day. For such small dogs like yours, they may only need 1/3 to one cup of food a day. Whenever you switch diets you should do so slowly by adding a small amount of the new diet each day as you decrease the old to avoid any gastro intestinal upset.

It is possible that since they were in restricted environments for many years, they did not learn to play or be active. Keeping a dog from being overweight has two main components: diet and exercise. It might be helpful if you put your dogs on a weight management diet such as Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management and control the amount of food given daily. Next, it would help to start your dogs on an exercise program. This could be simply daily aerobic playtime or even a walk. With regular exercise and a controlled diet most dogs will lose weight, but be patient, it could take several months until you see any results.

My Toy Fox Terrier just keeps getting fatter & rounder. She is three years old and was kept in cage until I bought her. She was spayed and fed just a little more than when she was caged. How can I get rid of this horrible fat - could anything be wrong with her?
While there can be health reasons that a dog might become obese, generally dogs become overweight when they eat too much and exercise too little. Being overweight can also shorten her life span. A good start would be to feed your dog a weight management diet such as Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management. If your dog would normally weigh 13-20 pounds, to lose weight she should eat one to one and a half cups of Purina ONE Healthy Weight Management a day. Check the package of the food you choose for appropriate feeding amounts. Remember however, that food intake is one side of the equation. Increasing her exercise by taking a daily walk will not only be enjoyable for both of you, but will help her lose weight.

I've recently adopted a Labrador Retriever from the local SPCA. She's a bit underweight and I'd like to get her back to a healthy weight. What should I do?
A dog might be underweight due to health problems, intestinal parasites or a poor diet. A veterinary visit is a good way to find out if she has intestinal parasites or another health problem that might be the cause of her low weight. Once she is determined to be healthy, be sure to feed her a complete and balanced diet such as Purina ONE Large Breed Adult or Puppy formula..
