73 My dog is about 9 months old. How long do I feed him puppy food?

74 Can you tell me when to start feeding my puppies with Purina ONE?

75 I have a 12 week old St. Bernard puppy. I am feeding him Purina One for Large Breed puppy food. I am feeding him 3 times a day, but I want to make sure I am not feeding him to much or too little at each feeding. How much do you recommend that I feed him each feeding.

76 How old should your puppy be when you switch them from the puppy formula to adult? We have a Chessie that is 8 months old and weighs almost 90lbs. He is not over weight; he is just a very big dog.

77 I have a six month old Weimaraner that weighs approximately 50 pounds. I have been feeding him twice a day and I was wondering exactly how much food I should be giving him in a day’s time.

78 We have a litter of six puppies that are 3 1/2 weeks old. The mother has stopped feeding them. What should we feed them now?

1 How do I know if my puppy needs a large breed puppy food? Large breed foods are most often used for dogs that will be over 50 pounds when full grown. If your puppy is a mixed breed and you are unsure of what to feed, please contact your veterinarian for input and advice.

2 When do I need to switch my puppy to an adult dog food? The answer to that often depends on the breed of dog. In general puppy foods are fed for the first year of life. However, large and giant breeds of dogs continue growing longer and may need special nutrition for a longer period of time. Always check with your veterinarian prior to changing your pets diet.

3 I have two Shih Tzu puppies now 3 month old, can they eat Purina ONE™ dog food and if so which one do I buy? First, enjoy your new puppies! Puppies do best at this age when they are fed puppy food. Therefore, Purina ONE™ puppy formula would be a good choice for your new puppies. Also keep in mind that puppies usually need to eat several small meals a day. So plan at the present time to feed your puppies 2-3 times a day. This also means you will need to be nearby to take them outsidi to eliminate shortly after they eat to avoid housesoiling problems.

4 I just got two dear chihuahua's that are 5 weeks old. I would like to know how many times they should get food. I was given Purina ONE™ for these girls, is this the right type of food to give them? Puppies that are that young probably need to eat at least three times a day. They may have some trouble with dry food at first, so you may need to moisten it. At this age, I would suggest a puppy food. They can stay on a puppy diet until they are a year old.

5 How often and how much food do you feed a 12 week Lab/Collie mix? We are using Purina ONE™ Brand Puppy food. The amount to feed your puppy depends to some degree on her weight. If she weighs between 10-20 pounds you probably would feed 1-2 cups a day. For young dogs it is best to feed the total amount split into two meals. Put her food down, give her about 20 minutes to eat and then remove any food that is left. Be sure to feed her when you will be home for about 1 hour so you can let her outside to eliminate.

6 On Sunday we adopted a puppy. It is now Tuesday and she has not been eating well. What should we do? There could be several reasons your puppy is eating poorly. First, she could be ill. If the decreased appetite is associated with lethargy, vomiting, or diarrhea, please take her to be examined by your veterinarian. Second, she may not be used to the food you are feeding or just recently weaned. Sometimes moistening the dry food a bit will entice her to eat. Resist the urge to add table food to her diet since this is not a good idea and may set a bad precedent. Finally, depending on her size, she actually may be eating enough to meet her nutritional needs. Again, a call to your veterinarian may help clarify what else you need to do.

7 I'm confused. My veterinarian told us to switch our female lab puppy to adult food as soon as she was spayed at 5 months. She's been on Purina One since the operation but I am afraid that she is missing growth nutrients even though she is now 74 lbs. She is now 10.5 months old. If your puppy is growing well and acting healthy then her diet is probably fine. I would continue to keep her on Purina One but watch her weight. As she gets older and less active she may need less food.

8 My 9-month old Australian Shepherd puppy is training for agility. Should she be eating puppy food, high performance food, or what? Also, what age should I switch her to adult and/or high-performance food? First, I would caution you to not press your puppy too hard at this stage. She is still growing and needs time to grow and mature and that takes considerable calories on its own. Hard training also requires additional calories. Therefore, while remaining on puppy food is fine, I would probably suggest feeding her twice daily so that she can take in the appropriate amount of nutrition. When she is a year of age, or if she is unable to maintain her weight on puppy food, I would suggest switching her to either an adult maintenance diet or if you are training quite a bit, a high performance diet. The main determinate is her weight and energy level. If she is able to maintain her weight well, has good energy and coat then she is getting enough nutrition. If she is lethargic, thin, has diarrhea then a visit to your veterinarian and a diet evaluation is in order.

9 I have a 13-week-old Boxer puppy and am feeding Purina ONE™ Large Breed Puppy Formula. How much should I be feeding a day? Purina ONE™ Large Breed Puppy Formula is a good choice for your new puppy. I would suggest you start by feeding your puppy one half to one cup two to three times a day. At this age your puppy will be growing quickly and needs adequate nutrition. But since her stomach is small she will need multiple meals to meet her caloric needs for the day. Be sure to feed her when you can be home to take her outside within 20-30 minutes of eating so that she will not soil in the house. As she grows you may need to increase her daily amount, but probably can combine that into two meals a day.

10 How many times should I feed my puppy? The answer to that question depends on how old your puppy is and what breed he is. Generally during the period of rapid growth a puppy should be fed 2-4 times daily. This allows for better control of body weight and growth rate that is especially important in large breed puppies. For example if you were feeding Purina ONE™ Growth & Development Formula, take the total daily allotment of food recommended for your size puppy and divide it into 2-4 meals a day. As your puppy ages, you probably could decrease to two meals daily.

11 I have a rotweiller/german shepherd mix puppy who is about 10 months old and 45 pounds. What is the right amount of dog food to feed her? Also when is a good time to put her on Dog Chow® brand Dog Food? Generally speaking a dog will eat one cup of food per 10-20 pounds of body weight. The actual amount will vary with activity level and individual metabolism. First, I would measure the amount of food you are feeding now. Then, I would suggest you start with 2- 4 cups a day for your puppy and if that is too much or she seems hungry, then you gradually adjust the amount you feed. When your puppy is about a year old, you can then transition her from the puppy food to an Adult formula.

12 How much Purina ONE™ puppy food should I feed per day to a four month old, 20 pound Australian Shepard. I am looking for an answer that deals in cups such as two cups twice per day. Many thanks!!! In general it is 1 cup of food per 10-20 pounds of body weight. Puppies and very active dogs may need more. I would start by feeding your puppy one cup twice daily while monitoring his activity level, weight and hunger. If he seems to need more, gradually increase the amount. If he does not finish all of his food, then decrease the amount.

13 What if my 11-week-old lab started eating large breed Purina® Puppy Chow® brand Puppy Food Large Breed Formula and then we switched him to Purina ONE ™ brand Dog Food Lamb & Rice formula. When we switched him yesterday he had runny stools. Do I need to switch him back to his regular dog food? Dogs can get diarrhea when they are switched from one food to another. However, they can also get diarrhea for other reasons such as intestinal parasites or an infection. Since your puppy is young a puppy food such as Purina ONE™ Large Breed Puppy formula is probably the best choice, but before you do another switch I would suggest contacting your veterinarian for help getting the diarrhea under control.

14 I am looking for products to help keep my puppy's teeth strong & healthy. Do you know of any products that could help me? Chewing hard foods such as dry dog food is extremely helpful in keeping teeth and gums healthy and strong. Dry dog food is more abrasive and helps keep tartar from accumulating on the teeth. Pick a good food appropriate for your breed and size and feed it consistently.

15 I have a miniature poodle and she is 5 months old. She will not eat hard puppy food. I need to know if it is okay if she eats soft puppy food or if she needs to eat the hard kind? Please help. Hard food helps stimulate the gums and keep dental tartar from accumulating. Over the long term it would be beneficial if your dog would eat some hard food. Some small dogs prefer hard food that is prepared especially for them and has smaller pieces. I would suggest you give that a try.

16 I just got a male beagle puppy just 10 weeks old. He is overweight and I would like to know how to appropriately put him on a diet to stay fit but lose some weight. At times a puppy may appear to be overweight because their stomach is large and bulging but there is not a layer of fat over the ribs. This might be a sign of intestinal bloating and parasites. Be sure to have a stool sample checked by your veterinarian to rule out parasites. The best plan is to feed a high quality puppy food such as Purina ONE and start with 1/3 to 1/2 a cup twice daily. With good exercise and correct nutrition your puppy will probably be the optimum weight soon.

17 What is the best advice on how many times a day to feed a dog? Should it be just once and let him eat all day or should it be split into meals? He is a 6-week-old Great Dane. Puppies need to eat more often than adult dogs. A six-week-old Great Dane should eat at least 3 meals a day. It also would be advisable to put him on a large breed puppy formula. I believe in feeding dogs meals, this allows us to better monitor food intake and overall health. Therefore, once he is a bit older you can feed him twice daily. That could be meals of equal amounts or a smaller "breakfast" and a larger meal later in the day.

18 My dog, a 7 month old Golden Retriever is on Purina One Large Breed Dog Food and is getting skinnier by the day. Is there a canned food that I can add to his food that you reccomend. Also, his urine is killing the grass, what is the best way to change this. Thank you Your puppy is already on a nutritionally complete diet and if he is eating adequate amounts another type of food is not the answer. When a puppy is not gaining weight in spite of having a good appetite a medical problem may be the cause. It is not uncommon for young dogs to have intestinal parasites which may hinder adequate digestion and absorption of nutrients. Therefore, I would recommend a complete veterinary examination and fecal check.

19 Our Akita puppy is having a time adjusting to our puppy food. She keeps having the runs. What do can we do to help her? While the food you are feeding your Akita puppy may be the culprit, there are other reasons a puppy might have diarrhea. The most common one is intestinal parasites. If you have not already done so, you should have a stool sample checked at your veterinarian. If that does not show any parasites, then you may want to work with your veterinarian to correct the diarrhea and find a food that works better for your puppy.

20 I have a 6-month-old sheltie that doesn't appear to be gaining any weight. He has a good appetite and we are currently feeding him a puppy formula. He does on occasion vomit for no reason; could these be related? At 6 months, your puppy may have stopped growing as fast as he did earlier. If he is very thin, losing weight and not eating, then a medical problem might be the cause and a veterinary visit is needed. If you have not had a stool check for parasites, then I would recommend that you do so, as well. If, however, he is just maintaining his weight, he might be close to the end of his growth or just between growth spurts.

21 How often should I feed my puppy and should I feed table food? Very young puppies often need three small meals spread through out the day. Once they reach about 4 months, then you can feed them twice a day. Fast growing large breed puppies may need more meals to meet their growth requirements. As for feeding table food, I would recommend against it. Not only will it alter the diet, but also it may make your pet finicky. What is most important while a puppy is growing is that they get proper nutrition and feeding table food may change that.

22 My pug is 14 weeks old. When can I feed him dry kibble? If your puppy is eating solid food well, he can be started on any good quality commercial kibble puppy diet. Because he is a puppy, it is best for him to be fed a puppy diet, which will meet the special nutritional needs for a growing puppy. If you find that he has a bit of trouble with the hard food, he might do better with a smaller sized kibble. If that doesn't help, then try moistening the kibble with a small amount of water. Over the course of a week or so you can probably decrease the amount of moisture in the food as he gets used to eating kibble.

23 What is the best way to wean a puppy from its mother? How do I know when they can stop drinking mother's milk and start eating solid food? Is there a recommended way to get them to start eating solid food? Puppies begin the weaning process at about 3 weeks as the mother begins to limit the number of nursing bouts per hour. At this time you can begin offering them moistened puppy food. Be sure to use a good commercial puppy diet. It is a gradual transition from nursing to solid food. Over the next several weeks the mother will decrease the time spent nursing, thus providing the puppies with less nutrition from milk and they will get more nutrition from the food you provide. If there are many puppies in the litter be sure to offer several dishes of food so that each one has an opportunity to eat. Most puppies are totally weaned by 60 days of age.

24 How much am I suppose to feed my puppy? He is 3 months old and weighs 25.9 pounds. It sounds like you have a very large puppy. Puppies do best on a diet especially designed for them so I would recommend a puppy diet. Since your puppy is already so large, he should most likely be on the large breed puppy formula.

25 I have a 6-month old puppy that is 33lbs. He has been eating the puppy formula food. Is it time to change to a different dog food and how much should I feed him? I have been feeding him two times a day. Thank you for help Although your puppy is already 33 pounds, he is still growing. For this reason I would suggest you keep him on a puppy formula food. You might want to consider Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula, which is designed for puppies weighing over 50 pounds at maturity. This large breed formula is designed to reduce the percentage of body fat while still allowing for proper bone and joint development. It still is appropriate to feed him twice daily at this point in time.

26 My puppy is almost 2 months old and I was wondering if I can give him milk? Also, he cries when nobody's around him or holding him. Is that normal?? Usually by the time a puppy is two months old, he should be eating solid food well and that should be his primary source of nutrition. His diet should consist of a good quality commercial puppy food and I would refrain from giving him milk. If for some reason he is not eating his puppy food well you could try mixing it with a bit of water to make it softer. As for his crying, he may be lonely. If you always go to him and pick him up if he cries he will learn that crying gets your attention and he will continue to do so. Try waiting until he is calm before you attend to him. If the crying is continuous, he could be ill and a veterinary visit is in order.

27 My Purina ONE puppy formula bag does not have feeding guidelines on it. I would like to know, how much and how often. Currently my puppy is 5- 6 pounds, is 9 weeks old, and is a Miniature Schnauzer. The Purina ONE puppy food is an appropriate diet for your puppy. A young puppy should eat at least twice daily and if possible perhaps three times daily. A puppy the size of yours may only eat 1/2 to 1 cup of food daily split into the three meals. It might be a good idea to start with 1/4 cup at each feeding and see how much she eats and if she keeps looking for more food.

28 I am currently using Purina ONE for large breed puppies for my 5 month old pointer/lab mix. Is there a canned food that I can mix with it because he doesn`t seem to like eating it very much and is always after the wet cat food I give my cats? I would stick with the Purina ONE large breed puppy formula which provides him with complete nutrition. You could try moisten it with a bit of water to see if he finds that more enticing. As for eating the cat food, perhaps you need to feed your cats away from him to avoid him eating their food.

29 Just got an approximately 7 wk old Irish Terrier and I want to get him on a dry puppy formula but he won't have any of it. Tried mixing a little meat gravy from some canned dog food and he licks it up but won't go for the dry food. Too soon or what? If he is very small he may not be used to eating dry food yet. Try moistening the food with water and see if he will eat it a bit more readily. You could also try offering several small meals a day with only a little bit in the bowl at each time. Over time he should be more used to eating the dry food and you can decrease the amount of water in the food.

30 I have 2 large puppies, 1 extra large puppy and one small dog. They eat out of each other's dishes. What should I feed them? It is best if the puppies eat food especially formulated for their lifestage. That means the large puppies should be eating something like Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. The small dog however should be on an adult diet such as Purina ONE Lamb and Rice Formula. To keep them from eating each other's food I would suggest set feeding times and feed the large puppies in one room and the dog in another. Then you should keep all of them apart until each one is finished. What they do not eat should be picked up and discarded and the bowls kept up and away until the next feeding time.

31 I have been reading a lot about the proper nutrition for my Great Dane puppy and I have found several sources that suggest some large breed growth and bone problems can be prevented by limiting the protein content of their food to 21 - 23% . Is there any wisdom to what I have read? Is it safe to feed my fast growing puppy 25 - 28% protein? Should I switch to an adult dog food as suggested in several breed references? Several factors seem to be involved in the development of orthopedic growth issues in young, fast growing dogs. Excessive intake of calcium and energy along with rapid growth may predispose some puppies to developing orthopedic problems. The control of weight gain seems also to be important as is avoiding "plump" puppies. Growing dogs may benefit from eating foods that are energy and nutrient dense because the volume of food intake can be smaller and not limited by stomach size. It is also recommended that large breed puppies be fed meal-limited feeding (3-4 meals a day until 5-6 months) and not free choice. You might want to consider Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula. It is scientifically formulated to help manage your large breed puppy’s growth, promote lean muscle mass and help reduce the percentage of body fat. Typically, for large breed puppies, it is recommended you feed a large breed puppy formula for up to 2 years, before transitioning to an adult formula.

32 Is milk good for puppies and how about fruits too? While it is not uncommon for puppies and dogs to want to eat other types of food it is not the best thing for them to do so. A puppy should be on a complete and balanced food such as Purina ONE Growth and Development. When a puppy gets other food such as milk and fruit they often decrease their intake of their more balanced diet. This could lead to nutritional problems. Therefore, it is better to make sure that on a daily basis they eat their diet provided for them.

33 My vet recommended a large breed puppy formula for our 5-month-old Basset which seemed to make her bowels loose. Would you recommend the Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula? Although a Basset hound is a short dog, I agree with your veterinarian that they are a large breed puppy. Therefore, I think a large breed puppy food is a good idea. It is not uncommon for one dog food to cause diarrhea when another does not. I would certainly recommend that you start your puppy on Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. Be sure to go slowly as you switch from one food to another, as this is less likely to cause diarrhea.

34 How much should my 9-week-old, 1.5 lb. Yorkshire Terrier puppy be eating and drinking each day? How long should she be left alone during the day? What is the best way to encourage her to use the bathroom out in the yard, not in the house? Your puppy should be on a puppy food like Purina ONE Growth and Development and should be provided with 1/4 to 1/2 of a cup of food total a day (follow the feeding instructions on the package to determine the appropriate amount for the product you buy). In such a young puppy this is best provided divided into 3 meals. A puppy that young really should only be left alone for as long as they can control their bladder and bowels, usually only about 3-5 hours. Otherwise the puppy may be forced to eliminate indoors and make house training more difficult. The best way to encourage her to use the bathroom outdoors is to provide frequent supervised trips outside so that she can eliminate in the proper location.

35 How many calories does the Purina One Puppy formula have in it per cup? Purina ONE has two formulas for puppies, Large Breed Puppy Formula and Growth and Development. The Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula has 377 Kcal/cup of metabolizable energy and is designed for puppies that will weigh more than 50 pounds at maturity. 36 What portions & how often do we feed our puppy who is a 7 mo. English Springer Spaniel? We purchased Purina One dog food. A Springer Spaniel puppy would be eating Purina ONE Growth and Development which is designed for puppies up to two years of age. Since he will weigh between 30 and 50 pounds when he is full grown, at seven months he might eat between 1 1/2 to 2 cups a day. Keep in mind the amount of food will vary with his activity level and rate of growth. Also remember that recent research has shown that dogs who are fed to ideal body condition throughout their entire life live longer than dogs who are heavier, so don't over feed your new companion.

37 I have a 13-week-old Labrador. He has had diarrhea since he was 8 weeks old. He was on medication for parasites. He eats normally and drinks a lot of water. What is the problem? There are any number of reasons your puppy might continue to have diarrhea. He could still have intestinal parasites so a fecal check would be a good place to start. Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

38 How do you keep a senior dog and puppy from eating each other's food since the puppy needs her puppy food and the senior needs her senior food? You are correct in assuming that each dog should eat food that is appropriate for their life stage. One way to assure that each dog eats their own food is to have set feeding times each day. This can be twice daily and at that time you provide each dog with a bowl of the appropriate food. They should be fed in separate rooms so that they only have access to their own food. Leave them with their food for 20 minutes and if they have not finished, pick up the bowls and put them away. They can be provided with food again later in the day but the dogs should always be fed separately. Not only will this help them to eat only their food, it will allow you to better monitor how much each dog eats.

39 How much do I feed my dog? I have conflicting information regarding the amount of food to give my dog. She is a 30 pound 5 month Lab/Shepherd mix. Your puppy should be on a complete and balanced diet such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula since she is likely to be over 50 pounds when she is full-grown. Large fast growing puppies need a diet that helps regulate their growth and allow for proper bone and joint development. At this point in time she would eat between two and three and a half cups of food a day. This can be split into two meals. As she grows you will likely need to adjust the amount of food she eats. In addition her activity level will also determine how much food she needs. It is important to feed enough to maintain a steady rate of growth without causing her to become over weight.

40 How much should my 11 week old puppy and my 7 month old puppy be eating? First it is important that your puppies be on a complete and balanced diet such as Purina ONE Growth and Development. Next, the amount to feed each puppy daily depends to some degree on an estimate of their adult weight. A puppy that will be up to twenty pounds and is presently less than 3 months of age would eat 1/2 to one cup of Purina ONE Growth and Development a day. As the puppy ages, the amount might need to be increased. Naturally a larger puppy would require more food, a smaller puppy less.

41 What is the normal weight for a male golden retriever at 7 months of age? A golden retriever puppy at seven months might weigh anywhere from 35-50 pounds depending on their genetics. Recent research has shown that keeping growing puppies lean while they are developing can help increase their longevity and future health. Therefore, your puppy should be on a good quality commercial puppy food designed to promote the proper growth and development of your dog such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula.

42 I searched your website for a feeding chart and couldn't find one. I have a 4 month old English Bull dog and he eats your Purina ONE for puppies, 3 times a day, one cup each feeding time. I am worried that it is not enough since he wolfs it down in 30 seconds. He seems hungry all the time. Am I feeding him enough Purina ONE? The amount you would feed your puppy is generally determined by his weight. At four months of age, one cup three times a day should be an adequate amount. You could try feeding him the total amount split between two meals instead of three and see if that helps. If he seems hungry all the time I would be concerned that he might have intestinal parasites. The best way to diagnose them would be by taking a stool sample to your veterinarian to be examined.

43 I have a one year old St. Bernard. I still am feeding him Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. Is this a good idea, and if so how long should I keep him on the large breed puppy formula? Large breed dogs such as your St. Bernard take a great deal of time to develop both physically and socially. They are continuing to grow and mature until sometime between 2 and 3 years of age. Therefore, it is acceptable to continue feeding a large breed puppy formula until he is about two years of age. At that time you can switch him to Purina ONE Large Breed Adult Formula. One additional important point. Research has shown that maintaining an ideal body condition throughout life may increase life span by up to 15%. Therefore, be sure to feed the proper amount to your dog but avoid overfeeding and obesity.

44 I have heard to leave my puppy on puppy food for 6 months. And I have heard to leave him on it for a year, what do you recommend and why? Generally a puppy is kept on a diet for growth and development for the first year. A complete diet such as Purina ONE Growth and Development is designed to meet all the special nutritional needs of young puppies. A puppy will continue to grow and develop physically for most of the first year and therefore you will want to provide optimum nutrition for that lifestage. When your puppy is older, you may want to switch to an adult diet. Any time you switch diets it should be done slowly over several days as you gradually decrease the old food and add in the new one.

45 My dog Pinky had puppies, but she died when they were just a week old. What should I feed the puppies? Finding the right nutrition for puppies is extremely important. When they are newborn, they will need to be bottle-fed using a formula specifically designed for puppies. It is not appropriate to feed them cow's milk or condensed milk. Your veterinarian can help you find the appropriate formula and who carries it in your area. Once they are about 4 weeks old they can be introduced to solid food such as Purina ONE Growth and Development. Initially the food will need to be moistened, but once they begin to eat it they can be slowly changed to feeding it dry. Be sure to provide enough bowls so that each puppy gets adequate food.

46 I have a 2 month old Golden Retriever puppy. I feed her twice a day and give her about 1 cup each meal. But after every meal, she is still begging for food. Am I feeding her to little? How many times, and how much should I be feeding her? A golden retriever puppy will be a large dog and should be on a diet specifically formulated for large breeds such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. The amount to feed her on a daily basis is based on her eventual size when adult, her activity level and naturally her personal growth and metabolism. Be sure that you are using a measuring cup to feed her that will be most accurate. A 4-5 month old puppy who will weigh about 75 pounds when full grown would eat approximately 2-3 1/2 cups of Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula daily split into two meals. A younger dog would eat less food, but may eat more often.

47 My dog Spot is only 2 months old. I would like to know if dry food is recommended instead of canned food? How often can he have a treat in a day? Even young dogs like Spot can eat a dry formula puppy food such as Purina ONE Growth and Development. It may be necessary to moisten it with water initially, but over time he should be able to eat his entire meal as a dry food. Dry food does have the advantage of helping to promote healthy teeth and gums. As for the addition of treats, one or two a day is fine, but be sure that he has eaten his meal first so that he gets a complete and balanced diet.

48 I have a golden retriever who is just a puppy born. How much food do I give him? A golden retriever puppy will be a large dog and should be fed a diet specifically designed for a large breed puppy. Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula would be a good choice for your puppy. It is designed to help regulate growth, support healthy bones and joints and maintain muscle mass and lean body condition. At 6-9 months of age your puppy would likely eat 4-5 cups of food a day. Naturally each puppy is an individual and daily intake may vary with activity level and body condition.

49 Should a Saint Bernard puppy not be fed regular puppy food? You are correct in assuming that a large breed puppy may have different nutritional needs than a smaller one. A St. Bernard puppy should be on a diet such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. This diet is specifically designed to meet the growth needs of large breed dogs and help promote healthy bone and joint development. Once he is an adult he can be switched to Purina ONE Large Breed Adult Formula.

50 My puppy is 8 weeks, she is a lab/retriever mix, I am feeding her the Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. Should I be feeding her Purina ONE Growth and Development formula instead? Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula is designed for puppies that will weigh over 50 pounds as an adult. Since your puppy is a Labrador retriever mix, she is likely to be in that weight range. Therefore, the Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula is an appropriate choice to feed her at this time. It is designed to promote proper bone and joint development and lean body mass. When she is over a year old you can switch her to Purina ONE Large Breed Adult Formula.

51 I am in the process of adopting a mixed breed puppy: bearded collie and schnauzer, 9 months old. I am trying to decide what type of dog food to buy for her. I need to know if she is basically done growing or if she will grow more from this point. She's 19" from shoulder to ground, 24"from head to ground, 23" from chest to rump and weighs between 35 and 40 lbs. Usually a puppy is kept on a growth diet until they are about one year old. Purina ONE Growth and Development would be a good choice for her at this time. She probably would consume between two to three cups of food a day. Some dogs like to have their total daily ration split between two meals so you might want to try that with her. If you have some of her old diet, switch slowly over one week's time from the old diet to the new one to avoid any gastrointestinal upset.

52 I have a 13 week old American bulldog who currently weighs 24lbs. I am feeding him Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula for large breed dogs. We have been feeding her 1 1/3 cup three times a day. Could you please let me know if I am feeding her too much and also when I should start feeding her twice a day? Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula is a good diet for your puppy. At 3 months of age she should get 1-1 1/3 cups of food a day. When she is between 4-5 months of age she would eat 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups of food daily, at 6-9 months she would eat 4-5 cups a day. When she is about 4-5 months you could begin to split her food into two daily meals. It is also useful to check her body condition; you do not want her to become overweight since lean dogs tend to live longer and healthier lives.

53 How often and how much should I feed a Boxer puppy 8 weeks old? He seems very skinny and I don't know if he's getting enough. He is very active and wants to play more than he wants to eat. Young puppies should be on a complete and balanced diet such as Purina ONE Growth and Development. He also needs to eat several times daily. If you feed Purina ONE Growth and Development, at 8 weeks he should be offered 1-1 1/2 cups of food split into three meals daily. A puppy may seem skinny not only because he is not getting adequate nutrition, but he may have intestinal parasites. Be sure to take a stool sample into your veterinarian to check for parasites as well as feeding him a complete diet.

54 I have an eight week old Black Lab. I am feeding her Purina ONE. I am feeding her three times a day, 6 ounces at each feeding. Is this sufficient? The breeder I got her from was feeding her twice a day, 8 ounces twice a day. I have read that you should feed a puppy three to four smaller meals a day. Thanks for your help. I recommend a large breed puppy food such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula, for a Labrador puppy. An eight week old puppy would probably eat 3 meals a day since their caloric requirements are high, but their stomach is small. A puppy eating Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula that will weigh between 50 and 75 pounds as an adult and is under three months would eat between 3/4 and 1 1/3 cups a day. A puppy that is 4-5 months would eat 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups a day.

55 Can I mix my puppy's(11 weeks) dry food with a little wet? It is important that your puppy eat a complete and balanced diet such as Purina ONE Growth and Development formula. If she is a large breed dog, she should be provided with a diet such as Purina ONE large breed formula. The dry food alone is sufficient to meet her growth needs. If you wish, you can moisten the food, usually adding one part liquid to four parts of dry food. If the moistened food is not consumed at that meal, it should be discarded. There is actually no need to add any supplements to this diet.

56 When should you switch from puppy food to dog food? The answer to that question is not always simple or the same from puppy to puppy. Large breed puppies may continue to grow well into their second year of life. For them, remaining on a food specifically formulated to meet their needs such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula for up to two years is best. Many smaller breeds of dogs will finish the majority of their growth within the first year. They can however be maintained on a growth diet into their second year as well.

57 Is it ok to give a puppy a human vitamin? It is actually never a good idea to give a puppy or dog any human medication or vitamins especially without the approval of your veterinarian. 58 I have a 6 mo. old Rottweiler mix puppy. He gets 3.5 cups of Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula a day. He weighs about 32 lbs. Yet I heard the other puppies from his litter are already 40-60 lbs. Am I not feeding him enough? Exactly how much food per day would you recommend? Thanks for your help. A 6-9 month old puppy weighing up to 50 pounds would get 3 to 3 and 2/3 cups of Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula a day. Keep in mind that there will be a variation in growth rate and adult size between littermates. If you believe your puppy is too thin, you can increase his food. But remember nutritional studies have shown that leaner dogs live longer healthier lives. At this point in his growth you do not want him to be overweight nor gaining too quickly.

59 Is it safe to give a puppy cooked chicken bones? It is not a good idea to give your puppy table food and most especially bones. Table food and bones could upset a puppy's intestinal tract and even cause blockage which could require surgery. Puppies need a complete and balanced diet to provide the optimum nutrition they need to grow. A diet such as Purina ONE Growth and Development is a complete diet to which nothing else need be added.

60 I am currently feeding my 7 week old black lab puppy the Purina ONE brand. I am adding water to it to soften it up overnight (refrigerated) because this is what the breeder was feeding him. Can I give him the same food without adding water to it? I want him to get used to hard food. Do I have to change it gradually? Your puppy will be a large dog so he should be on a food like Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula. When a puppy is young and first learning to eat solid food, moistening the food makes it easier for him to eat. As he gets older, the amount of liquid can gradually be reduced until he is eating the food totally dry. A young puppy needs to eat 3 meals a day initially to meet his nutritional needs, but as he grows, this can be decreased to two meals daily.

61 I'm thinking of getting a Lab puppy and would like to know what would be best to feed it? A young, fast growing puppy such as a Labrador Retriever should be on a food especially designed for his nutritional needs. Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula may be a good choice for your puppy. He should stay on a puppy diet until he is about 1 year old and then can go to a food such as Purina ONE Large Breed Adult formula.

62 I just got a 10 week old lab puppy and I don't know how much he weighs but he was the biggest in the litter. My question is I don't know how much food I am supposed to be feeding him and how long after I feed him will I need to let him go outside. I tried letting him out right after eating and he just looks at me and he won't leave the door unless I go out with him. Please help I don't know what to do!! He is likely going to need to eliminate 20-30 minutes after he eats, when he wakes up from a nap and after he plays. At 10 weeks of age your puppy will still need direction when going outside to eliminate, therefore you should go out with him. A large breed puppy such as yours should be on a diet especially formulated to meet his needs such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula. At his adult weight he will probably weigh about 75 pounds so at 3 months he will eat 3/4 to 1 1/3 cups of food a day. The amount of food should be increased as he grows and adjusted to keep his weight within a healthy range.

63 Hi, I just got a chocolate lab pup who just turned 5 months old. I have been feeding him Purina ONE Growth and Development. How much should I give him and how many times a day? Thank you. Since he is going to be a large dog you may want to consider feeding him a food such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula. At five months of age he would eat between 2 1/4 to 3 1/2 cups of food a day. Many dogs prefer to eat twice daily, having their total daily allotment split between two meals. If the puppy eats in the morning, you need to be home to enable him to go outside to eliminate. As he gets larger, you will need to increase his daily food intake.

65 Hello, I have recently bought Purina ONE Large Breed puppy food for my boxer puppy. However, the bag does not tell the recommended feeding amounts. How much should I feed my puppy each day? She is 5 months old. Thank you. Most Boxers are between 45-60 pounds when they are full grown. At five months your puppy should be offered 2 1/4-3 1/2 cups of Purina ONE large breed puppy formula a day. This amount may be split between two meals. Keep in mind that these are guidelines and each individual puppy may eat more or less than the suggested amount. The goal is to maintain a consistent rate of growth and lean body mass through out the developmental period. As she grows, you will need to adjust the amount you feed. This information can be found on the side of the bag.

66 I have a 9 week old puppy. He is half Labrador, half Rottweiler. How much do I feed him? He weighs 6 lbs. The package said 1 cup but he eats it in seconds. Do I give him more? If he is half Labrador Retriever and half Rottweiler he will be a large dog. A food such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy Formula would be a good dietary choice for him since he will likely weigh more than 50 pounds when he is full grown. Assuming he might weigh up to 75 pounds when he is done growing, at 3 months of age he would eat 3/4 to 1 1/3 cups of food a day spread over two to three meals. Keep in mind these are only guidelines and each puppy will grow at different rates. Avoiding overfeeding of large breed dogs may help their development, so be careful to provide the right amount of food, but do not overfeed. A fast growing puppy may need his food intake adjusted on a weekly basis.

67 I am looking for specific information regarding my puppy. She is 5 months old, about 35 pounds, and is a German Shepard/Sharpe mix. How much, and how often should I be feeding her? Thank You! She is likely to be a larger dog, over 50 pounds, so you could feed her a food formulated for larger dogs such as Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula. At this point in time she would eat between 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 cups of food a day. She should be fed this amount split between two meals, one in the morning and one in the evening. As she continues to grow you will need to increase her food to meet her nutritional needs. She can be maintained on this diet until she is done growing. Remember to slowly switch her from her present diet to a new one over at least one week's time to avoid any upset stomach.

Purina ONE Large Breed Puppy formula is specifically formulated to help with proper bone and joint development in large breed puppies. It also helps promote a lean healthy puppy with less body fat. 71 Is it ok to switch from a puppy to adult food that is the same brand without mixing each one together? The quick answer is "no". Although the brands may be the same, when diet change is done quickly many dogs will experience diarrhea. Therefore it is a good idea to slowly phase in the new food over one week. This will allow the intestinal tract to acclimate and for you to observe any changes in your pet with the new food.

At six months of age a Wiemaraner puppy should be offered 4.5-5.0 cups of food a day split between two meals. Naturally the rate of growth and activity level of each puppy may differ and each may need more or less than the recommended amount to maintain steady growth without becoming overweight.
